There were many people who the team talked to that seemed interested in just bringing the card art to life. In the interview with Polygon, he also talked about the struggles of finding a great team who understood what it was that they were trying to do with the potential series.

It is likely that the animated cartoon will feature a story that is more realizing these characters as if you are in their world rather than some card game.

What Jarvis is meaning is that this upcoming MTG Netflix series won’t be feature a person playing the actual card game, most likely. In the case of Pokemon, the show doesn’t actually feature the card game but it does revolve around the monster battling gameplay that is featured in the core video games. There are some underlying stories and lore about the card game that are presented there but at its core, it’s a show about a card game being played just like in the real world. Such as in the case of Yu-Gi-Oh!, the show is quite literally about people who are battling with cards in their fictional world. What he said that he doesn’t want the MTG Netflix series to be is a property that just makes the card gameplay into a literal video format. Jeremy Jarvis noted that the team isn’t trying to make another “ Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh!” show, but rather something totally different. Interestingly enough, the team is going for a more “character-based” story.
